Recent Activities

Anne Castle, Department of the Interior Assistant Secretary for Water and Science, chaired the third Alaska Mapping Executive Committee (AMEC) meeting held on July 31, 2013, at the Department of the Interior. Acting co-chair Mike Aimone from the Department of Defense was also in attendance.

The AMEC meets to discuss Alaska mapping activities, agencies' requirements, and program status. One of the Committee's current activities is the development of funding projections to complete the acquisition of baseline elevation data for Alaska over the next 4 years. Since the inception of the AMEC, here are some of its accomplishments:

  • Developed a Committee Charter
  • Set initial mapping objectives and measures
  • Developed a website to host Committee materials and information
  • Established a Technical Subcommittee
  • Identified and inventoried multiple sources of elevation data
  • Set initial mapping objectives and measures
  • Helped increase new elevation coverage over Alaska from 15 percent to 48 percent since establishment of the Committee
  • Supported addition of funding for Alaska ifsar in the President's FY14 and FY15 budgets
  • Developed elevation funding projections and scenarios
