Transition to 3DEP

The OMB Circular A–16, “Coordination of Geographic Information and Related Spatial Data Activities” (Office of Management and Budget, 2002), designates the U.S. Geological Survey, as the lead agency for the coordination and management of the Nation’s terrestrial elevation data and designates the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) as the lead agency for bathymetric data.

In this role, the USGS has offered a variety of elevation data products and services from the National Elevation Dataset (NED) for many years. Now that 3DEP is operational, the data holdings of NED have been rolled into the new program, and NED as a dataset and system are retired. The 3DEP Products and Services suite provides both gridded bare earth data products and point cloud data, along with capabilities to produce other derived elevation surfaces and products from 3D data.

3DEP is operational. Transition activities completed to implement 3DEP include:
