On September 18, 2015, older National Atlas Web Map Services (WMS) and Web Feature Services (WFS) were shut down. The National Atlas services were made available beyond their originally scheduled shutdown date of September 30, 2014 to allow users access until new small-scale services became operational in the summer of 2015.
As of January 2017 in an effort to stabilize dynamic services being served through The National Map, USGS has temporarily suspended small-scale services. The timeframe in which these services will be down is not yet determined, and some services may eventually be consolidated with others or no longer offered. We hope to have small-scale services back up sometime in March 2017.
Small-Scale Web Services
The National Map offers Web Map Services (WMS) that lets you connect to the small-scale data using your Web browser, geographic information system (GIS), or desktop mapping program to visualize and dynamically access and retrieve small-scale data.
You can connect to nationalmap.gov to display or use our data in your own maps and applications. The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) provides open standards for a variety of web services.
The new web services are now available through the ESRI REST services API and in the following open formats listed in the table below.
