Background Information
Sample map Sample Map
A port is a populated place with a harbor where ships load or unload. This map layer includes just major seaports or inland ports. Groups of ports in close proximity were assigned to a single town or city. The U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers were the primary sources of this information. The official harbor names were provided by the U.S. Geological Survey.

The Ports of the United States map layer includes major ports of the United States and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

This map layer was produced by the National Atlas of the United States. It is part of our collection of fundamental digital cartographic data known as 1. This collection includes base map data in vector format at 1:1,000,000-scale and in raster format at 100-meter resolution. Read more about the 1. A Global Map edition of this map layer is also available.
